As the fourth generation of the Twining family to oversee the firm, Edward Twining, Jr. continues the company’s tradition of technical excellence and responsive service. His primary focus is to instill his family tradition into the larger family of employees, to foster relationships with municipalities and long-term clients, and to actively advance the growth of the company.
Brian C. Kramer, R.C.E., G.E. possesses over fifteen years of technical and managerial experience on critical design and construction projects. In addition to leading geotechnical investigations and analyses relative to the development of residential, commercial, and public use facilities, he has also been called upon to provide expert witness testimony on significant litigation cases including forensic evaluations of distressed residential and commercial structures and evaluation of earthquake damage. As Principal Engineer for Twining Laboratories, Mr. Kramer is responsible for the technical oversight and management of the firm’s projects and technical personnel. His technical background is complimented by his M.B.A. from the Paul Merage School of Business at the University of California, Irvine.
Robert M. Ryan has been affiliated with Twining Laboratories and its associated companies since 1977. He brings vast knowledge in all areas of field inspection, and is a leading expert on all aspects of structural steel construction and non-destructive testing. His experience includes oversight of special inspection for some of Southern California’s landmark projects. Mr. Ryan provides consultation on welding and non-destructive procedures, including specification preparation and review, and on complex problems related to welding such as cracking, unusual joint configurations, and so on.
Boris Stein, D. Sc., is a materials scientist, consulting engineer and educator with extensive experience in cementitious based materials, concrete technology and construction. Dr. Stein holds fifteens certificates on inventions and patents and is the author and coauthor of numerous technical publications and books. He has contributed to the development and implementation of special concretes for fast track construction and the rehabilitation of concrete pavements, concretes with industrial by-products and waste materials, processes of manufacturing of precast concrete, and more. Dr. Stein leads work performed by Twining in the areas of concrete technology, evaluation of materials for concrete, rigid pavements, investigation of concrete in existing structures, and engineering of cementitious based materials.
Steven D. Schiffer ensures the company's continued success through his business development efforts in a wide variety of markets including schools and universities, hospitals and healthcare facilities, arts and entertainment venues, industrial buildings, mixed-use developments and commercial construction.
With more than twenty years experience in the quality control industry, Hung T. Nguyen, R.C.E. heads Twining Laboratories' engineering services division. His responsibilities include technical supervision, construction materials research and development, failure investigations and special projects.
Richard S. Hazen, R.G., C.E.G., is a California Registered Geologist and Certified Engineering Geologist with over 25 years of experience as a geologist in California. His education includes degrees from UCLA and Stanford University. As Principal Engineering Geologist, Mr. Hazen heads Twining Laboratories' forensics division, providing geotechnical and expert witness services to attorney and insurance company clients throughout Southern California. He also leads fault and landslide investigations as well as geologic site evaluations in support of design projects for Twining Laboratories' growing geotechnical division.
Chris C. Gerber oversees the company's asphalt pavement division and continues to grow our reputation as an industry leader in flexible pavements. He is an active member of the American Public Works Association, the Asphalt Pavement Association, the Rubber Pavements Association, the National Asphalt Pavement Association, and is an active co-chair of the Caltrans expert task group on flexible pavements. He has vast knowledge of hot mix asphalt materials and the constraints during production as well as experience managing comprehensive quality assurance and quality control programs. Throughout his career, he has overseen the design, inspection, and testing of over 2 million tons of hot mix asphalt. Mr. Gerber also oversees our office and laboratory in Ventura.
Paul C. Soltis, R.C.E., G.E., is a California Registered Civil and Geotechnical Engineer with over ten years of experience in geotechnical engineering. Mr. Soltis oversees Twining's geotechnical division, and his experience includes geotechnical site investigations and evaluations, geotechnical design recommendations, construction oversight, and forensic evaluations for residential, public infrastructure and commercial projects.
With over seventeen years of experience in the roofing and waterproofing industries, Tesfamarian Merid, R.R.O., heads Twining Laboratories' roofing and waterproofing division. Mr. Merid is a registered roof observer and his daily responsibilities include technical oversight and management of roofing and waterproofing projects.
Linas Vitkus, R.C.E., G.E. has over nine years of experience in geotechnical investigations, forensic investigations, laboratory testing and project management. Mr. Vitkus has acted as project manager and technical supervisor for many of Twining's most significant projects including schools, hospitals, and high rise structures. Mr. Vitkus also provides guidance and leadership to our other project managers, is the technical manager for the Long Beach laboratory, and he is responsible for corporate oversight of Twining's network of laboratories.
As the head of our human resources department, Amy Owens, P.H.R., brings over ten years of experience to Twining Laboratories. Her expertise includes benefit and compensation analysis, organizational and professional development, and employment relations.
As Director of Strategic Planning, Susan A. Pierce is at the forefront of Twining's continued growth and expansion. She is currently working closely with Twining Infrastructure on new growth initiatives related to our public sector clients.
With more than fifteen years experience in specialized testing and the quality control industry, Mike Fattal oversees Twining Laboratories' advanced engineering and special testing services and supports other Twining divisions. His responsibilities include technical supervision, developing new product test protocols, innovative and non-typical testing, construction materials research and development, failure investigations and special projects.
