Pavement Evaluation & Design

Western Infrastructure offers Pavement Management System (PMS) consulting and performs a variety of engineering support functions including pavement evaluation and design, geophysical surveys, and subsurface utility engineering. We have extensive experience in both network- and project-level pavement analysis and design as well as materials testing and the selection of appropriate pavement types and treatments for different pavement structures under various conditions.

We provide an integrated team of consultants with special expertise in all aspects of pavement management who partner with our clients to provide individualized solutions specific to their needs. We understand that their desire is often to make the most sensible, cost-effective decisions regarding their pavement infrastructures, and we provide them with the information necessary to do so. Our services include:

  • Pavement Condition Reports
  • Pavement Evaluation Reports
  • Pavement Management Systems
  • Street Evaluation Services
  • Pavement Materials Engineering
  • Inspection and Testing Services
  • Construction Consulting Services
  • Research and Development

Our experienced team uses pavement evaluation techniques that include visual surveys and destructive (invasive) testing along with a variety of nondestructive testing alternatives such as detection testing and profile measurement. We also employ ground penetrating radar (GPR), which is used in highway inspection to provide information on pavement structure and layer thickness. The GPR equipment we utilize operates at highway speed and requires no traffc control. It is also used frequently to locate pipes and utilities, in concrete and rebar imaging and inspection, and when dealing with sinkholes, geologic hazards and landfill. Our surveys can detect various forms of pavement deterioration, voids and regions of excessive subsurface moisture.

Our state-of-the-art laboratories and field equipment, along with our highly qualified staff, mean that Western Infrastructure can provide all required testing services in-house and under the direct supervision of our engineers and other experts.

With offices and laboratories throughout California, our professionals are able to quickly respond to our clients’ needs with local knowledge and experience. Our understanding of the local natural environment coupled with our unsurpassed expertise means that Western Infrastructure has the solution to solve your transportation challenge.

Thousand Oaks Boulevard

Twining performed a road pavement evaluation on a two-mile section of Thousand Oaks Boulevard. The road has four asphalt concrete travel lanes with a center divider/turn lane and is a major collector with a significant amount of automobile and truck traffic.

At the time of our investigation, the pavement surface showed a variety of distress types of relative severity. To evaluate the pavement structural section condition and develop remedial treatment options, we consulted with the City’s representative to design a scope of services that included the use of:

  • Surface Condition Surveys
  • Ground Penetration Radar (GPR)
  • Falling Weight Deflection (FWD)
  • Pavement Coring
  • Laboratory Testing
  • Geotechnical and Materials Engineering Analysis
